If you’re an Estimator looking for a stable main contractor where you can work on a good variety of projects, this is worth a look. You’ll be joining a family-owned construction company with over 40 years in the industry, a strong workload and a team where people tend to stay.

The company delivers refurbishment, fit-out, new build and design & build projects, generally ranging from £1m to £15m, across commercial, healthcare, leisure, hospitality, retail and public-sector work.

It’s a friendly, down-to-earth business rather than a big corporate environment. You’ll be based at their modern Hitchin office, working alongside an experienced commercial and pre-construction team and taking responsibility for tenders from the initial enquiry through to submission and handover.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Preparing estimates and tenders for construction projects typically valued between £1m and £15m.
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender documents.
  • Carrying out take-offs and putting together accurate cost plans.
  • Sending enquiries to subcontractors and suppliers and comparing quotations.
  • Building up labour, material, plant and subcontract costs.
  • Identifying risks, opportunities and value engineering options.
  • Attending tender meetings and site visits when required.
  • Liaising with clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Working closely with the commercial and operational teams on successful tender handovers.
  • Managing several tenders and deadlines at the same time.

What They’re Looking For

  • Previous experience working as an Estimator for a main contractor.
  • Experience pricing refurbishment, fit-out and/or new build projects.
  • Good understanding of construction methods, materials and subcontract packages.
  • Confident reading drawings, specifications and tender information.
  • Good numerical skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable dealing with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Organised and able to manage several tenders at the same time.
  • An HNC, HND, degree or other construction-related qualification would be beneficial.

What’s On Offer

  • Salary up to £50,000, depending on experience.
  • Car allowance.
  • Company pension.
  • Annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Varied refurbishment, fit-out, new build and design & build projects.
  • Strong pipeline of work.
  • Friendly, experienced team with low staff turnover.
  • Long-term opportunity with an established main contractor.
