We are recruiting for a Civil Engineering Quantity Surveyor to join a privately owned groundworks and civil engineering subcontractor based in Hemel Hempstead. The company has long-standing relationships with Tier 1 contractors and delivers non-residential civils, highways, infrastructure, foundations, drainage, roads, groundworks and site preparation projects, typically valued up to £4m. It is an established business with a close-knit, family-run feel and a strong pipeline of varied work.

This is a good opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor who knows civil engineering and wants real responsibility across several live projects. You will work closely with the commercial and operational teams, deal directly with clients and subcontractors, and have the freedom to manage your own workload without the layers found in a larger contractor.

The Role

As Quantity Surveyor, you will take commercial responsibility for a mix of groundworks, civil engineering, highways and infrastructure projects. The role is based in Hemel Hempstead with site visits as required, giving you a good balance of office-based commercial management and involvement on live sites.

  • Managing variations, compensation event notices and quotations
  • Cost tracking, forecasting and CVRs
  • Carrying out measures and take-offs using Bluebeam
  • Managing subcontractor accounts and procurement
  • Attending site visits, progress meetings and commercial reviews
  • Keeping accurate commercial records and protecting contractual position
  • Working closely with site teams, clients and subcontractors
  • Managing the commercial side of multiple civil engineering and infrastructure projects, usually up to around £4m in value

What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working as a Quantity Surveyor
  • Civil engineering experience is essential for this role
  • Strong background in groundworks, drainage, highways, infrastructure or site preparation projects
  • Contractor or subcontractor experience
  • Confident managing applications, variations, subcontract accounts, forecasting and CVRs
  • Experience using Bluebeam for measures and take-offs
  • Good Excel skills and strong commercial attention to detail
  • Able to manage your own workload across several live projects
  • Full UK driving licence and able to travel to sites when required
  • CSCS card

Why Join Them?

  • Up to £65,000 plus car allowance and a strong benefits package
  • Established, privately owned civil engineering and groundworks business
  • Varied projects across highways, infrastructure, drainage, groundworks and non-residential schemes
  • Real commercial responsibility and direct involvement with live projects
  • Close-knit team with fewer layers and quicker decisions
  • Good long-term opportunity with a secure pipeline of work
