Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Groundworks / Civil Engineering / Subcontractor
Location: Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire

Working Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8-5.30
Benefits: PAYE role, pension, car allowance, mileage allowance for site visits, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, Christmas shutdown, training and development opportunities, and real exposure across live groundworks, civils, infrastructure and site preparation projects
We are recruiting for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join a privately owned groundworks and civil engineering subcontractor based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. They have been around for a long time, have built steady relationships with Tier 1 contractors, and work across non-residential civils, highways, infrastructure, foundations, drainage, roads, groundworks and site preparation projects. The work is varied, usually up to around £4m in value, and the company still has a smaller, family-run feel rather than feeling too corporate.
This would suit an Assistant Quantity Surveyor who wants to get properly involved and learn from people around them. It is not a role where you will be hidden away doing one small part of the job. You will be working closely with the commercial team, getting out to site when needed, and building good hands-on subcontractor experience.
The Role
As Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team across a mix of groundworks, civil engineering, highways and infrastructure jobs. The role is office based in Hemel Hempstead, with site visits when needed, so you will get a good mix of commercial admin, project work and time out on live sites.

- Supporting variation and compensation event notices and quotations
- Cost tracking and general commercial administration
- Assisting with forecasting and CVRs
- Measures and take-offs using Bluebeam

- Working across multiple civils and infrastructure projects, usually up to around £4m in value
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Quantity Surveying, Assistant Quantity Surveyor or Trainee Quantity Surveyor role
- Contractor or subcontractor experience preferred
- Civils, civil engineering, groundworks, drainage, highways or infrastructure experience would be useful, but it is not essential

- Experience with Bluebeam for measures and take-offs
- Good Excel skills and strong attention to detail
- Full UK driving licence, with the ability to travel to sites when required
- CSCS card required
Why Join Them?
- Privately owned and growing, with a strong background in groundworks and civil engineering
- Varied work across highways, infrastructure, groundworks and non-residential schemes
- More involvement than you might get in a larger contractor
- Close-knit commercial team, with people around you to learn from
- Good chance to build proper civils and subcontractor experience
- Training and development for someone who wants to keep progressing
